When Is the Best Time for the Great Wildebeest Migration?
Witness One of Africa’s Greatest Wildlife Experiences
The Great Wildebeest Migration is one of the most spectacular wildlife experiences in Tanzania. Every year, more than a million wildebeest, together with large numbers of zebras and other grazing animals, move across the Serengeti ecosystem in search of fresh grass and water.
But the migration is not a single event that happens on one specific date. The herds are constantly moving, following the changing seasons, rainfall, grazing conditions and water availability.
This means that every safari can offer a different experience.
January – February | Calving Season
During January and February, large herds are generally found around the Southern Serengeti and Ndutu area.
This is the calving season, when thousands of wildebeest give birth. It is an incredible time to visit, especially for travellers who want to witness newborn animals and the dramatic predator activity that follows.
June – July | The Herds Move North
As the dry season develops, the herds begin moving towards the Western and Northern Serengeti.
The journey is long and challenging, creating exciting opportunities to see large herds on the move, predators following the migration and dramatic wildlife encounters along the way.
August – September | Northern Serengeti & River Crossings
During August and September, parts of the migration may reach the Northern Serengeti, where some herds attempt to cross rivers. These crossings can be one of the most dramatic sights in African wildlife. However, nature follows its own schedule. River crossings are unpredictable and depend on rainfall, water levels and the movement of the herds. For this reason, no responsible safari operator should guarantee that a river crossing will happen on a particular day.
